“Healthy Teeth, Happy Kids” Primary School Dental Care Project
On October 25th,2022, a group of staff and students from the Faculty of Dentistry at Tishk International University visited Ishik Gulan Kindergarten and Primary School at Erbil, KRG, as part of the School Dental Care Project, titled: “Healthy Teeth, Happy Kids”.
The project was supervised by the Director of Social Affairs and Guidance Dr. Zaynab Yalman, Dr. Huda Shaml, Dr. Sara Sherzad and Miss Sara Salim.
The project aimed to conduct dental checkups for school students and give them dental homecare instructions. After the checkups, the staff and students from Tishk International University visited each class individually. They motivated the children to eat healthily and brush their teeth through a video song and subsequent oral instructions.
School dental screening aims to identify oral health concerns at an early stage, hence prompting preventive and therapeutic oral health care for children. The project also provides a way for children to have regular access to preventative dental health and a link to additional treatment services. The dental students checked 188 students and filled case sheets with diagnoses and a treatment plan for each student to be treated in the TIU Dentistry Polyclinic. The primary school students are given six months from the day of their examination, from October 25th, 2022, to May 30th, 2023, to visit the Faculty of Dentistry dental clinics at TIU to receive the required dental treatments.
The primary students received gift bags, and information sheets were given to their parents to work together hand in hand in maintaining the children’s oral health.
The school manager expressed his pleasure and gratitude for arranging activities to help kids keep their teeth healthy. At the end of the examinations, the Faculty of Dentistry staff and students received appreciation certificates from the school’s directory.
This project was first discussed on October 16th, 2022, when the first meeting of the Dean of Students was held. On October 18th, 2022, a second meeting was held with the primary school, followed by the third and final meeting on October 24th, 2022, to decide on the final arrangements and prepare all the required equipment and materials.
