Abstract:
Introduction: Nano technology is a new technology which is manipulating atoms and molecules on a nanoscale (1/100 millionth mm ) or less and used for making many aspects of life better including biological aspects, in this research the aim is to confirm if Silver-Nanoparticles have antibacterial activity and also antibiofilm activity if coated on titanim implant disc.
Methodology: Silver coated titanium implant disc was immersed in 1.8mL of Brain Heart Infusion Broth (BHIB) and incubated for 24h in order to release the nanoparticles within the broth and plate agar that contain isolated Streptococcus mutans then prepared the bacterial suspensions by single colony of S. Mutans was inoculated in 5mL BHIB broth in the screw-capped tube incubated for 24h. Then preparing the treatment and control tubes, three tubes (treatment tubes) each containing 0.6ml of silver nanoparticle broth with 0.6 ml bacterial suspension and three control tubes each contain 0.6ml bacterial suspension and 0.6ml sterile broth were arranged, All tubes were incubated for 24 hrs at 37 °C. Turbidity test was performed to determine the effect of Ag-NPs on bacterial growth. For the antibiofilm activity tube method was done as described by Christensen et al., 1982.
Result: Results showed that dissolved silver ions from silver coatred titanium discs exhibit some degree of anti-bacterial activity by preventing the growth of Streptococcus mutans. However, results of an antibiofilm activity test did not show any significant difference between the groups.
