On February 11th, 12th and 13th 2024, the Faculty of Dentistry at Tishk International University (TIU) performed an academic trip to the Directorate of Blood Bank Erbil. The trip included second-grade students and was held under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Dr Monica Miasko, Miss Sultan Muzafar, Research Assistant at the Medical Analysis Department. This activity was organized by the Dean of Students Representatives in the Faculty of Dentistry, Mr Ercan Sezer and Mr Yusuf Siddiq.

e students were organized into groups of 30, further subdivided into groups of 10, each accompanied by a guide from the directorate. Approximately 170 students participated in the visit. Various Blood Bank Departments were toured, where at each department, the guide provided a brief explanation of their work. Concurrently, Dr. Monica Miasko, the activity supervisor, offered practical advice to her students. The tour included almost all departments within the Rectorate, such as the Blood Evaluation Department, Laboratory Department, Donor and Recipient Department, Electrophoresis Department, Thalassemia Department, Administrative Department, Refrigeration Department, Quality Control Department, among others. Notably, one of the students from Tishk International University (TIU) expressed a desire to donate blood. Consequently, the necessary tests were conducted, and the student donated blood, allowing his peers to witness the blood donation process firsthand.

As dental professionals, our dedication to patient care transcends oral health, embracing their overall well-being. This commitment entails being equipped to treat patients with a range of medical conditions, including blood disorders like leukemias and those in need of transfusions. Recently, the significance of understanding blood physiology within the realm of dentistry has gained recognition. In essence, a comprehensive grasp of blood physiology is crucial for delivering holistic care in dentistry. By prioritizing education and staying abreast of healthcare advancements, dental professionals can more effectively meet the varied needs of their patients while ensuring a secure practice environment.
