On February 26th, 2025, the Faculty of Dentistry at Tishk International University (TIU) organized an academic trip for its second-grade students to the Directorate of Blood Bank in Erbil. The trip was arranged by Assistant Lecturer Dr. Monica Miasko and supervised by the Dean of Students’ Office in the Faculty of Dentistry.
Thirty students were divided into groups, each accompanied by a guide from the directorate. The groups toured various Blood Bank departments, where a guide provided a brief explanation of the work performed in each section. Concurrently, Dr. Monica Miasko, the trip organizer, offered practical advice to her students. The tour included almost all departments, such as the Blood Evaluation Department, Laboratory Department, Donor and Recipient Department, Electrophoresis Department, Thalassemia Department, Administrative Department, Refrigeration Department, and Quality Control Department, among others. Notably, one of the students from TIU decided to donate blood. The necessary tests were conducted, and the student donated blood, allowing his peers to witness the blood donation process firsthand.
As dental professionals, our dedication to patient care extends beyond oral health to their overall well-being. This commitment requires being prepared to treat patients with a range of medical conditions, including blood disorders and those in need of transfusions. Recently, the importance of understanding blood physiology within the field of dentistry has gained significant recognition. A comprehensive grasp of blood physiology is crucial for delivering holistic care in dentistry. By prioritizing education and staying current with healthcare advancements, dental professionals can more effectively meet the varied needs of their patients while ensuring a secure practice environment.
